Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a page so an AI system — a search engine's AI Overview, a voice assistant, a chat-based answer engine like ChatGPT or Perplexity — can extract a direct, correct, standalone answer from it, ideally without the user ever clicking through. It differs from traditional SEO in what it optimizes for: traditional SEO optimizes to rank a page in a results list; AEO optimizes for a page's content to be the thing an AI system quotes, cites, or paraphrases as the answer itself.
The two goals overlap heavily — a technically sound, well-structured, trustworthy page tends to perform at both — but they're no longer identical. A page can rank respectably in classic search while being poorly structured for an AI system to extract a clean answer from it, and vice versa.

A meaningful and growing share of searches now resolve without a click — answered directly inside an AI Overview, a featured snippet, or a conversational response from an AI assistant. When that happens, the page a search engine used to construct that answer often gets a citation, but the user's actual information need was already met before they ever reached the site.
That shift changes what "ranking well" is actually worth. A page ranking #1 in classic search still earns a click. A page an AI system quotes without a click earns a citation and a brand impression, but not necessarily the visit — which means the content itself, not just the click-through, has to carry more of the trust-building and brand-recognition work that a visit used to do.
Four concrete things, not a vague sense of "quality content": a direct, self-contained answer stated early and plainly, rather than buried after several paragraphs of preamble — AI systems extract more reliably from content that states its answer before its context, not after. Structured data (FAQPage, HowTo, Article schema) that makes the question-and-answer relationship machine-readable, not just implied by page layout. Clear, unambiguous language over rhetorical or marketing phrasing — a system extracting an answer favors a plain, checkable statement over a clever one. And genuine depth behind the direct answer, since a system that can verify a source has real expertise behind a short answer is likelier to keep citing that source over time.
This is also why every page on this site leads its major sections with a plain-stated claim before any elaboration, and why FAQPage schema accompanies genuine FAQs rather than being added cosmetically — both are AEO-specific structural choices, not just general writing style.
It doesn't mean writing shorter content, or stripping out depth to look more "extractable." A short, shallow page with no real substance behind its stated answer doesn't out-compete a deep, well-sourced one for citation over time — AI systems, like search engines before them, are built to detect and discount thin content that's optimized for extraction but hollow underneath.
It also doesn't replace technical SEO or genuine topical depth — it sits on top of both. A page an AI crawler can't reach, or that has no real topical authority behind its claims, doesn't become extractable just because its opening paragraph is phrased as a direct answer.
They're closely related but not identical — featured-snippet optimization targets a specific classic-search UI element, while AEO covers a broader set of surfaces: AI Overviews, chat assistants, and voice answers, each with somewhat different extraction behavior.
Not a different structure — the same technically sound, well-organized site AEO needs is also good for classic SEO. AEO adds emphasis on stating direct answers early and using structured data (FAQPage, HowTo) consistently, on top of the same technical and topical foundation.
Directly, it's hard to measure with certainty since most AI systems don't report referral data as cleanly as classic search does. Indirect signals — branded search volume increasing, direct traffic increasing, or noticing your own content quoted in an AI system's response — are the practical proxies available today.
